New Acrylic – FPA – effective fire protection worth considering

As you already know Knauf FireWin is a system of fire protection solutions that will ensure powerful fire protection. Knauf FireWin continues to evolve and expand its production and wide range of products has been added to our FireWin system. In this article we want you to learn more about Knauf Fire protection acrylic – FPA.

Knauf Fire protection acrylic - FPA is a fire rated single component partly flexible acrylic mastic specially designed for fire sealing. The sealant expands when heated and produces an efficient seal against fire, smoke and gas.

It is designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke through joints and openings in fire rated walls and floors including openings formed around building service penetrations. It will also maintain the acoustic design performance in walls and floors. The Knauf FPA Acrylic is supplied in liquid form contained within 310 ml cartridges and 600 ml foil packs.

Knauf Fire protection acrylic FPA cures when it is subjected to atmospheric conditions, however it will retain a degree of elasticity for joint movement. Under fire exposure FPA creates a robust fire seal by the formation of a durable intumescent char.

Thermal activation takes place at about 180°C when the material will expand and prevent the passage of fire and smoke for up to 4 hours.

FireWin Acrylic properties:

• Classified for fire sealing all types of construction and building service penetrations
• Easy to apply and has a smooth surface finish
• 18 months storage life (under correct conditions)
• 30 years working life
• Fire resistance up to EI240
• Very high sound insulation (≥62 dB)
• Low emissions - environmentally and user friendly
• Permanently flexible – will accommodate movement up to 12.5%
• No priming necessary for application to most materials
• Suitable for most surfaces, included concrete, masonry, steel, gypsum, glass, plastics and most non-  porous surfaces

• EAD 350141-00-1106 and EAD 350141-00-1104

The specific elements of construction that the system Knauf FPA Acrylic may be used to provide a penetration seal and a gap or joint seal in, are as follows:

• Flexible walls: The wall must have a minimum thickness of 75 mm and comprise steel studs or timber studs   lined on both faces with minimum 1 layers of 12.5 mm thick boards.
• Rigid walls: The wall must have a minimum thickness of 75 mm and comprise concrete, aerated concrete or masonry, with a minimum density of 650 kg/m3.
• Rigid floors: The floor must have a minimum thickness of 150 mm and comprise aerated concrete or concrete with a minimum density of 650 kg/m3.

The system Knauf FPA Acrylic may be used to provide a linear joint or gap seal with the maximum permitted joint/gap width up to 100 mm and penetration seal with specific single insulated metal pipes, uninsulated metal pipes, plastic pipes, combustible cable conduits, composite pipes and with specific electrical cables, single or in a bundle:

• Blank seals up to 300 x 300 mm
• Single electric cables up to Ø21 mm or in a bundle up to Ø100 mm
• Single electric cables up to Ø80 mm or in a bundle
• Copper pipes up to Ø54 mm
• Alupex composite pipes up to Ø75 mm
• Stainless steel pipes up to Ø324 mm
• Plastic pipes
                        i. PVC-U, PVC-C up to Ø40 mm
ii. PP up to Ø40 mm
iii. PE up to Ø40 mm
